Beach Buzz: Open and Shut

First up in today's Beach Buzz is the sad news that the iconic Manny's Beach Club has closed. Per an announcement made on the Manny's Beach Club Facebook page on the 11th this month:

"Hey Beach Club fans. Sorry to say we have officially closed
Thank to all you loyal fans for your memories of good times.
The business and land are for sale.
We will keep this page and our website up and running, feel free to post your memories and photos."

The general response from everyone when the news got out: This is a sad day!

Manny's, located on the beach in the Mirador area of Rocky Point, started as a simple taco stand in the summer of 1985. Called "El Taco Loco" Manny Sanchez and Sylvia Samaniego started it with $600 dollars. All these years and lots of hard work later, it now has 3 bar and restaurant areas, hotel accommodations, the addition of a 3rd palapa and a capacity of up to 1,000 guests.

I've spent many a lazy afternoon sitting outside of Manny's watching the ocean while squadrons of pelicans soared by. I hope whoever buys it will honor its history and its place in our hearts.

The good news? Their newest venture, the Tequila Factory is staying open.

On a more upbeat note, ground has been broken for a new Walmart (or perhaps a Walmart de Mexico subsidiary? Bodega Aurrera already has stores in San Luis Rio Colorado and Caborca; maybe this will be another? Superama, on the other hand, has no stores in Sonora at all). Anyhow, it is going in on Benito Juarez across the street from Santa Fe Market as you come into town.

I will leave it to you as to whether that's a good thing or a bad thing for Puerto Penasco in the long term. But for now it means jobs, and once it's completed it will provide some better shopping options for PP's residents.

And that's the Buzz on the Beach for today.

Peace out...
