The 80/80 factor that rules Peñasco!

-by El Gitano Peñasco, "The Peñasco Gypsy"

Maybe I should have called this week’s rant: ‘Stop putting most of your eggs in one basket’ because I recently read an article that I agree with suggesting that roughly 80 percent of the tourists here are from the US and that about 80 percent of those are from Arizona.

About a year and a half before the big financial crash that affected Peñasco in such a big way I was talking with a mortgage company in the USA and asked the ‘Jefe’ why they offered US based ‘money’ and other services in Cabo, Vallarta, Cancun, etc. but not in Peñasco?

The answer was simple, concise and ultimately proved to be true: “Rocky Point is too dependent on Arizona,” he said, “and if something goes wrong with the Arizona economy then our business would suffer the consequences.”

As it turned out, the ‘world’ basically took a hit from the great recession that began in 2008 but the advice of that mortgage company is something we all need to remember as we move forward towards a brighter future.

It is time to get off the Arizona-based milking machine and start marketing Peñasco to people from outside AZ, and more towards Mexicans living across this great nation as well as folks in different parts of the ‘old-country’, Canada and beyond…

Of course don’t look for any leadership in this area because ‘they’ are well vested (and paid) in what they’ve been doing for years and are as likely to change (even in the face of overwhelming evidence) as a D+ freshman from a Maricopa Community College is to not drink too much while down here spreading the joy and glory of, well, you know…

A Gypsy can always dream!

¡Viva Puerto Peñasco y México!
