Movie Theaters Open Today in Puerto Penasco

Today is a big day in Rocky Point. Two of the six long-awaited movie theaters in the new Porto Mio Shopping Center will open for business tonight, and to say that Peñasquenses are excited about it would be an understatement.

Each of the six theaters in the complex will seat 150 people and will show first-run movies. The theaters will be operated by Cinemark (“Your Theater, Near You”), a new concept of high quality movie theaters for small cities that puts both national and international film within easy reach of a public that traditionally has to travel hours to larger cities in order to see the latest films. The best part? Theater tickets are cheap in Mexico, generally running in the vicinity of US$3.00! And word is that some of those movies will be in English with Spanish subtitles.

Located near the Old Port area across the street from Latitude 31, the theater complex is part of a $30 million project by Metropoli Architects, out of Monterrey, Mexico that will eventually include 28 commercial rental spaces, office space, a building that will house 95 condos for sale (one old press release mentioned timeshare?), a 180-room hotel, the six movie theaters and underground parking for up to 600 cars.

Services to be offered will include a money exchange, a bank, various shopping opportunities, restaurants, a grocery store (reportedly a Super Santa Fe), and more.

Added to the recent additions of WalMart's Bodega Aurerra, a new Sam's Club, an Auto Zone store, upgrades to the Malecon, a new public beach and the ongoing construction of the new Convention Center, this new mall is a promising sign that not only is Penacso paying attention to improved infrastructure but major outside companies are seeing a future for the city.

It's all good news!
