You may have read this week how Mexico’s Military found a short tunnel in San Luis that had electricity, ventilation, etc. and though the actual intent of the burrow was only speculative the article claimed its purpose was to smuggle drugs from the Mexico side of the border in order to meet the demand on the U.S. side.

Of course Fox TV News ran with the story complete with videos of ‘a’ tunnel and they claimed the purpose of the passageway is for both the smuggling drugs and “illegal aliens”. But unlike the printed newswire report that was circulating, Fox TV News did not inform their viewers that small cars could drive through the channel as well.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

If it happens I’ll be the first to welcome the rumored new air service by AeroMéxico because marketed properly to the million+ folks living in the Vegas market it would be a surefire shot in the arm for our local economy and I suspect that, unlike the Phoenicians, visitors traveling from Vegas would be inclined to come down for a week or two ‘vacation’ and spend some big Pesos!

I did check with the AeroMéxico website and as of this writing there is no mention of service coming from Vegas to Peñasco (and back) and when I e-mailed them for more information that inquiry bounced back as not being deliverable.
No, I’m not talking about the most recent donation whereby an ambulance from the good folks at Life Line Ambulance Service Inc. will soon be parked at our International airport, but instead an ambulance strategically located in the center of town that will respond to specific medical emergencies for our visiting turistas and especially those of the Gringo variety.

Here’s how it would work--- but do keep in mind the incredible stressful lives that these poor souls from the ‘Old-Country’ live under in their mostly corrupt and crime ridden communities, etc., especially those residents under the false illusion that they are all living in freedom!
Awaken your inner beach bum...

Today is a big day in Rocky Point. Two of the six long-awaited movie theaters in the new Porto Mio Shopping Center will open for business tonight, and to say that Peñasquenses are excited about it would be an understatement.

Each of the six theaters in the complex will seat 150 people and will show first-run movies. The theaters will be operated by Cinemark (“Your Theater, Near You”), a new concept of high quality movie theaters for small cities that puts both national and international film within easy reach of a public that traditionally has to travel hours to larger cities in order to see the latest films. The best part? Theater tickets are cheap in Mexico, generally running in the vicinity of US$3.00! And word is that some of those movies will be in English with Spanish subtitles.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

It's June in Puerto Penasco. Summer is here. And so were some genuine movie stars!

America Ferrera (Ugly Betty, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Real Women Have Curves), Michael Pena (Observe and Report, 30 Minutes or Less, Crash, World Trade Center) and Rosario Dawson (Gemini Division, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Girl Walks Into a Bar) recently visited Penasco for a couple of days break from filming a biography about legendary civil rights activist and Latino icon Cesar Chavez.
The script by Keir Pearson (Hotel Rwanda) will focus on Chavez organizing “the largest non-violent protest in U.S. history to accomplish his ultimate goal of obtaining basic human rights for over 50,000 farm workers in California.”

The crew has been filming in various locations across Sonora over the past two months including Hermosillo, Pesqueira, and Cananea.

How did they like it? America Ferrera tweeted regarding the above photo: "The bigness of my hair is due to the awesome beach trip I took this weekend with the cast of CHAVEZ to Puerto Penasco."
Awaken your inner beach bum...

The year was 1988, the month was October, it was a balmy Sunday night around 9:30 as a small group of real estate and timeshare sales reps sat around having a few cold ones and talking story at one of the few cantinas in town, the then-beloved Señor Sushi’s in Cabo San Lucas.

Back in those days most people around the world, including folks from Mexico, had never even heard of ‘Cabo’. Our long story short is my wife and I first discovered this remote outpost while living in Hawaii and having spent many years in the Islands we both agreed it was time for a real adventure and off we headed to parts unknown.
The calles here in our beloved Peñasco this week are again riddled with crime! But before we look at our own criminal elements and crime spree I wanted to update everyone on some other headlines and news stories I came across this week from a couple of communities up in the ‘Old Country’ (aka: USA).

There were two (2) more drive by shootings this week but the 16 victims were not killed (this time) and have been released from the hospital after an overnight stay. Also, but unrelated, there were 27 strong arm robberies, 32 confirmed rapes, 13 attempted rapes, 77 sexual battery issues, 182 burglaries, 89 barroom brawls, 9 bank robberies and 183 cars stolen.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

Mas tequila!

There's no time to waste if you want to attend Rocky Point's first annual International Tequila Fest! Sponsored by Peñasco's Restaurant Association "Canirac Puerto Peñasco", it will be held Saturday, June 16, in an open air “amphitheater” (an empty lot) at the base of Whale Hill in Old Port, from 5 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

You can reserve a table for 250 pesos per person, or general admission for just milling around and having a great time is 50 pesos.

There will be tequila tasting, of course, and food along with entertainment by Rafael Jorge Negrete(Grandson of legendary Jorge Negrete); Mariachi Estrella de Plata from Hermosillo, Sonora; local folk artists; and who knows what else!
Awaken your inner beach bum...
By many accounts it would appear that between the recent Holy Week, Espring Break and the US Memorial weekend holiday lots of folks visited Peñasco and a good time was had by all. Plus there were no major or significant problemos to report, at least to my knowledge.

This is all good news but I do have a bone to pick with a couple nameless business owners here who concluded that since people were starting to come back to Peñasco again, and in significant numbers, it is the perfect time for them to jack up their prices, rates, charges, fees, etc.

Now don’t get me wrong because I, too, am a hungry money grubbing capitalist. But the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people who travel here aren’t worried about ‘safety’ issues and instead, as they have for decades, are seeking a great time and at a fair market value (aka: prices, costs, etc.).
Awaken your inner beach bum...
He started in Del Rio, Texas where he sampled PB's Bar and Grill due to its decor and Mexico-styled cuisine. From there he went into Nuevo Laredo, MX. where he explored the shopping area along the border, with all types of service of shopping needs. He paid special attention (humorously) to pharmaceutical drugs for less than half the price of what would be found in the U.S. and a leather goods shop, where he fondled the whips. Next Tony stopped by Piedras Negras (aka "the door to Mexico"). There he gorged out on a variety of foods at street carts, mourning the fact that most tourists are afraid to eat at such places. He was a very happy man.

And so the show progressed, to the point of this particular segment, where he did some off-roading then took a boat ride down the Rio Grande and discussed the border issues and the border fence that so many Americans still want to build along the entire Texas border.

You know, if you've ever watched his show, that this video will be both entertaining and educational. I mean, how can you not like a guy who drinks and smokes and eats his way all over the world? Watch the video...
Awaken your inner beach bum...
For over 3 years, Rosie Glover has had the pleasure of being at the helm of the TOURISM & VISITOR ASSISTANCE (TVA) office in Rocky Point, Sonora, Mexico. Since its inception in 2009, when a group of business owners decided to creatively counteract negative press about Mexico in the U.S, the TVA has assisted thousands of vacationers in Rocky Point. It was and remains an invaluable service, based on giving every visitor to the community a friend they can call at any hour if they have any problem whatsoever. The assistance offered is available in English and is free of charge.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

On this Memorial Day I want to share this story with you. I don't know who wrote it:

As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open.

The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car, and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away.

I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too, and took a few steps towards him.

I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade. He then turned back to the old man. I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying:

'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot.
An amiga of mine copied and pasted a post from a Peñasco chat room and e-mailed that to me wherein someone claimed that they have made 30 trips to Rocky Point over the years and in all that time, until this very last trip, they had never ventured towards the Black Mountain region, including the neighboring areas of Laguna Del Mar and the Laguna Shores.

The game changer, this time, was a super discounted vacation promotion to stay at Laguna Shores in a 1-bedroom fully furnished Condo at a price of $69 for two nights, three days for two adults and may have included a bottle of wine and a dinner tossed in as well.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

Mexican Rice, which is ubiquitous throughout Mexico in homes and restaurants, is often called "Spanish Rice" in the USA. But it does not exist as such anywhere in Spain; the only thing it has in common with Spain is the language spoken in both countries. It is generally served as a side dish as part of the main course, and it is not usually spicy.

This is a very simple dish to prepare, and though there are many slight variations from home to home, region to region, the basics are pretty much universal: Rice, some type of tomato product, onion, garlic, cumin and water or chicken broth.

First I'll give you the basic recipe I learned some 20 years ago or so from a Mexican neighbor. Then I'll add some notes on how I personally make it at home, and then you can make your own personal changes to suit your own tastes. The picture, by the way, is of the basic recipe, without any of my slight alterations.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

Several reliable sources noted this week that a contract has been awarded to a Mexican company to improve the Federal Highway system throughout the State of Sonora, Mexico.

The company winning the 7-year US$200 Million+ contract for improving and/or upgrading the 797 kilometer Federal Highways system is Empresas ICA, S.A.B. de C.V. (bmv:ICA) which, according to the company’s press release is the “largest engineering, construction, procurement and infrastructure company in Mexico”!
The package of highways includes the roads that link the main cities in Sonora, including Hermosillo, Nogales, and Puerto Peñasco, and is expected to start construction during the end of May.
Awaken your inner beach bum...
Can you believe this marks the 21st show for RCPM and Circus Mexicus in Rocky Point? And here's an indication of how it has grown over the years: This year's event (and it IS an EVENT!) will be attended by people from at least 36 US states and 7 countries (Canada, England, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Thailand, and the USA)! So far, advance ticket sales are on pace to match 2007's sales, which is a very encouraging sign for Rocky Point! You can get more information (and advance tickets) at http://www.azpeacemakers.com/

This year, RCPM wants more Mexican residents of Puerto Peñasco to participate in the fun, too. To that end, local Mexicans can buy discounted $15 tickets to the Saturday concert at Wrecked At the Reef, as long as residents present their local Mexico ID when picking up their tickets at Will Call.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

The U.S. Border Patrol has a new policy that likely took millions of US tax dollars to produce over the past two years and when it released the 32-page guidelines to their troops it sort of sent a chill up and down my spine as I pondered one of the stated U.S. Federal Government objectives.

Now, keep in mind that according to their own records ‘illegal’ crossings into the USA from Mexico is down to an all time low as are captures (arrests down 80%) from their lowest point since 1971. The decrease is credited by many as a direct result of the U.S. economy and not just better ‘patrolling’, etc.

By most accounts it would appear that the recent annual Espring Break and Semana Santa gatherings were a success and according to one local real estate professional, Rebecca Palomino of Reality Executives, home sales are also making a rebound and prices appear to be stabilizing.

The fact of the matter is there are some downright outstanding real estate bargains around town and although some ‘sellers’ (or their real estate agents) seem to (still) be out of touch with reality the bottom line is a wise buyer looking for a casa to (e.g.) retire in or for a long term investment, IMHO, you couldn’t go wrong striking a good deal with a motivated seller.

One key to keep in mind is that if a property being sold is fully paid off then, with the right seller, owner financing is often an option. And if you are a really good negotiator (‘buyer’) there is nearly no end to the type of agreement that can be reached so that both parties ‘win’.
Awaken your inner beach bum...
In case you aren't familiar with it, think of the El Pollo Loco chain of fast food restaurants. That's Sinaloa style chicken and it's good, but it doesn't have quite the depth of flavor you'll find in Mexico. This recipe will do the trick for you.

I got the basic recipe many years ago from a kind fellow who had a chicken stand in Mazatlan (you had to get there early before he sold out!), and I kind of adjusted the ingredients for serving only one chicken at a time. He flattened whole chickens (see Pollo Asado al Carbon to find out how that's done), grilled them over charcoal, then cut them up when they were done and ready to serve.

My other favorite place for this chicken was (and probably still is) El Pollo de Oro in Cabo San Lucas, OMG they serve great food there! They put the chickens on spits there and slow roast them till the skin is golden and the meat ready to fall off the bones; and as a bonus, they place racks of spareribs underneath the chickens so all that delicious fat drips down on the ribs and flavors them while they cook--- you've never had better ribs!
Awaken your inner beach bum...

Vidanta Golf, the largest golf course operator in Mexico and subsidiary of Grupo Vidanta, debuts the second annual Uniting Nations Cup golf tournament on the Peninsula de Cortez golf course, a Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II co-design at the Mayan Palace resort in Puerto Penasco. The Uniting Nations Cup will be held on May 17 - 20, 2012 and is scheduled to take place annually at the Mayan Palace.

The Uniting Nations Cup will consist of amateur teams competing from Mexico and the Southwest United States with the participation of approximately 48 high caliber amateur golfers from each country ensuring competitive yet exciting playoffs. There are approximately only 15 events of this type currently in Mexico, including destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Puebla, Torreón, Merida and central Mexico, among other areas throughout the country.
Awaken your inner beach bum...

It's sand and dust as far as the eye can see, with the dominant color being beige.

Most prominent of the region's features is the El Pinacate biosphere reserve, covering 714,556.6 hectares which includes parts of the municipalities of Puerto Peñasco, San Luís Río Colorado and Plutarco Elías Calles. This area has been considered one of the most arid and inhospitable of the Sonoran Desert.

Yet in spite of this, there is an incredible diversity of plants and wildlife to be found around Puerto Penasco, not the least of which is the presence of at least 237 species of birds. These birds inhabit all manner of niches in the area, but aside from the coastline the best places to look are often the many estuaries, along with places in town that provide good habitat with plenty of trees and bushes.
Awaken your inner beach bum...
