A Jobs Summit Por Peñasco!

-by El Gitano Peñasco, "The Peñasco Gypsy"

There is a lot in the news (again) that is affecting our region, including one story that appears to be part of the ongoing and misguided drug policies of Mexico, the USA and indeed much of the world and that includes more mayhem; but I'm refusing to discuss that particular topic this week.

I prefer instead to focus on some ideas about the meeting that just took place by local and regional authorities who are asking for input regarding the creation of new jobs for all of Sonora including, of course, Peñasco.

It seems the powers that be are looking beyond just the fishing or tourism industry in order to broaden employment opportunities in the industrial and manufacturing sectors and they are seeking ideas from everyone.

So, since a couple of the key ‘players’ read El Gitano and this blog on a semi regular basis I thought I’d toss out an idea and naturally invite others to join the fun, think outside the box and see what we can come up with!

My first suggestion is something I wrote about a couple years back, and that is we ought to build a rail service that runs between Peñasco and the U.S. border. That would naturally create short and long term jobs and it would also allow a fun way for travelers to come on down without worrying about (eventually) airport hassles, driving concerns, etc.

Some time ago there was apparently rail service between Nogales and San Carlos and they’ve been talking (on and off) about providing that service again and it seems to me that rail service to Peñasco would be a natural win-win!

And since the government of AZ likes to meddle in our affairs we can get them to cough up some funds and have them build a ‘boarding-station’ (and the tracks etc. leading to/fro) at Lukeville or maybe even further inland around Why, or Ajo and/or Gila Bend…

Money should be no problemo either because, believe it or not, there is a lot of private capital available (in the real world) for such projects. And if the train service ultimately had a ‘theme’ base to it (like the old-west; Mexico and USA) that would likely attract even tourists from around the world. And the more folks that come here in turn would create more jobs and opportunities for everyone!

A Gypsy can always dream!

¡Viva Puerto Peñasco y México!
