I just read a PR dated October 30th, 2010 that states tourism in Mexico, nation wide, is up: “Data released by the Secretaria de Turismo (Ministry of Tourism, Sectur) in September 2010 showed that tourist arrivals to Mexico totaled 11.3mn in the first half of the year, representing growth of 5.3% growth year-on-year (y-o-y).”
I’m one of those who rarely believes ‘numbers’ put out by any government agency (or business) anywhere in the world, but I’d like to believe that Mexico’s tourism ‘biz’ is booming and ‘if’ it is then that has to be great news for Puerto Peñasco too!
Of course we are competing against some long standing favorite travel destinations in Mexico such as PV, Cancun, Cozumel, Cabo, Mazatlan, etc. and because we are, as I’ve said repeatedly, the power-brokers here need to ‘sell’ (market) Puerto Peñasco as ‘Mexico’ first and foremost!
Using that approach, next they need to decide if it is in the best interest of the community to remain a somewhat 'ATV, drinking, Spring-Break’ kind of place or should they go after a more affluent crowd like the wealthiest generation to ever live on planet earth; aka: The traveling and retiring baby-boomers from all nations.
Just imagine (not too concentrated) the jobs that would be created, the new businesses that would open up, the revenue pouring into the city-coffers if, say, 10,000 homes (average 2 people per casa) from around the world settled here…
And with all that guaranteed retirement income being spent here, stabilizing the local economy and providing more revenue to improve the infrastructure, Peñasco would attract more ‘big-spending’ vacationers to come see whatzup in our seaside community.
Win win!
¡Viva Puerto Peñasco y México!
