Punta Cana or Peñasco?
-by El Gitano Peñasco, "The Peñasco Gypsy"
As most will recall I’m not a big fan of the annual ‘Spring-Break’ festivities in Peñasco and was pleased to discover that this year the ‘offshore’ destination of choice is Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
Actually, I’m not opposed to the yearly event except for that low-rent element of ‘Breakers’ who when traveling abroad are a national embarrassment and too stupid to know that along with being ‘ambassadors’ of the USA they ultimately, by their actions, ‘label’ most other young (Gringo) folks as obnoxious, rude, crude and stupid drunken party animals!
And yet, they are only part of the problem because when ‘Spring-Breakers’ travel to (e.g.) Maui you’ll be hard pressed to find the local authorities or businesses tolerating them puking in the streets, defecating in swimming pools and otherwise trashing their hotel rooms, the common areas or passing out in restaurants or bars.
Down here we have the added dimension that out of the approximately 70,000 ASU (Arizona State University) students, the ones from the lower spectrum of the economy who can’t afford to spend (e.g.) $1,000 (per person) on a packaged deal and fly off to Costa Rica, instead only need to fill up the gas tank and speed down here to spread their ‘joy’…
Then, after they have laid waste to this community for a short time, we’re right back where we started from, which is an isolated area that is absent ‘real’ tourists who are somewhere else today spending (a lot of) their money 24/7/365.
A Gypsy can always dream!
