A Tunnel From Phoenix To Peñasco?

-by El Gitano Peñasco, "The Peñasco Gypsy"

You may have read this week how Mexico’s Military found a short tunnel in San Luis that had electricity, ventilation, etc. and though the actual intent of the burrow was only speculative the article claimed its purpose was to smuggle drugs from the Mexico side of the border in order to meet the demand on the U.S. side.

Of course Fox TV News ran with the story complete with videos of ‘a’ tunnel and they claimed the purpose of the passageway is for both the smuggling drugs and “illegal aliens”. But unlike the printed newswire report that was circulating, Fox TV News did not inform their viewers that small cars could drive through the channel as well.

These reports reminded me of the great ‘Wall’ debate in the U.S., especially in Arizona where ‘some’ want a fence to reach to the heavens, span the horizon and, barring no expense of taxpayer dollars and people’s lives, they want it electrified, too. By doing so ‘they’ suggest the good folks up in the ‘Old Country’ would sleep well at night.

Earlier this year I watched another TV show about that proposed ‘Wall’ and on the Mexico side of the border a reporter was interviewing one ‘transient’ who told the reporter that it didn’t matter what kind of barriers they construct because (paraphrasing here) ‘We are Mexicans. We are very proud. We are very creative. If we want to go, we go…’

I found myself agreeing with that gentleman and having just read about this short (in length) San Luis ‘project’ I also started wondering if it were possible for ‘someone’ to build a tunnel from Peñasco up to Lukeville, AZ or perhaps Why, AZ, Ajo, AZ or the Gila Bend area.

My first thought was no, not from Peñasco. That is just too many miles of earth to dig through and move. But on the other hand, I thought if someone were to start a tunnel in the Sonoyta area heading north that would surely work.

Those thoughts led me to my youthful days as a young infantry grunt in Vietnam and how in 1969 I learned of the massive tunnel complexes all over the nation, including my general AO (Area of Operations) in the Tay Nihn Province and particularly around what we called the “Black Virgin Mountain” (Núi Bà Đen).

All that thinking stimulated some ‘Googling’ and I discovered that, worldwide, there are tons of ‘tunnels’ out there, some going for up to 100 miles in length. And after reading about those I came to the same conclusion that Mexican gentleman told the reporter in the aforementioned interview.

Wall or tunnel, crossing the border legally or illegally and for whatever purpose and in whichever direction; when there is a will, there is always a way and some day it would not surprise me if they discover a tunnel that leads back and forth between Peñasco and Phoenix.
