Beach Buzz: New flights; a FUN RUN; the Deli House & more

-by La Huerita

First, some things I'm working on for future posts. In the Recipes section I'm putting together a list of the most commonly used chile peppers in Mexican cooking, what they're used for, what they look like and (most important) how hot they are. Hopefully, that will be finished in time to replace next Thursday's usual recipe of the week. Second: I've been laboring over a column about fishing in Rocky Point, what you can expect to catch and when and where, along with some tips on bait, etc. Stuff like that. This has been difficult because I don't fish and I want to make sure it's accurate, so lots of research is involved. I hope to have that finished soon. Cross your fingers.

Now for some bits and pieces of news you can use from Rocky Point.

Commercial flights have been inaugurated to Puerto Penasco-- FINALLY! Late last month the new Mar de Cortes International Airport welcomed its first ever commercial flight, courtesy of Aereo Calafia. Regular flights, in a Cessna 208 Grand Caravan with a capacity of 13 passengers, serve Penasco every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Here is the current Schedule:
  • Hermosillo to Penasco 11:10 - 12:25
  • Penasco to Mexicali 12:50 - 13:40
  • Mexicali to Penasco 14:00 - 14:50
  • Penasco to Hermosillo 15:05 - 16:25
RATES:
  • Penasco to Hermosillo: $1282pesos
  • Penasco to Mexicali: $1179pesos
  • Hermosillo to Penasco: $1397pesos
  • Mexicali to Penasco: $1266pesos
Flights to more cities are expected to be announced later in the year. Hey, it's a start!

Like to have fun? Got a motorcycle? Then you won't want to miss the first annual Rocky Point FUN RUN Motorcycle Rally from May 5 through 9! Event Sponsors are offering specials on food, drinks and lodging and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to help support two local charities: Rick Busa's "YOUTH SPORTS FOUNDATION" and the "ADOPT-A-CLASSROOM of Puerto Penasco". The more you spend the more the children of Rocky Point will benefit, and you know that when you help kids your fun quotient rises accordingly! ;) You can find all the details and sign up at the FUN RUN website. Be there or be square!

There's a new restaurant in town that is worth a visit. Located right across the street from the General Hospital on Rio Suchiate, The Deli House seats 40 and serves up sandwiches, croissants and bagels as well as traditional Mexican meals. If you like good bagels and croissants, this is the place to go! I'm told that their breakfasts are outstanding, the pulled pork torta is very especial, and if you like cheesecake you won't be disappointed! On Sundays kids under the age of 8 eat free! Hours of operation: Mon-Fri 8-8 Sun 9-4

Last but not least: A 50-year-old man from Puerto Penasco is not a happy camper these days. During the evening on March 30, Border Patrol officers screening traffic coming from Mexico decided to inspect the man's 1995 Chevy pick-up. The CBP's specially trained K-9 team pointed out something suspicious in the gas tank, and further investigation found metal boxes full of marijuana-- 155 pounds of it, with an estimated street value of $346,000. Oops. (GOOD doggie!)

Needless to say, CBP officers seized the vehicle and the pot. The man, whose name has not been released, was turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for further investigation. And you can bet that things are not going well for him.

And that's the Buzz on the Beach for today.

Peace out...
