I’m reading one of those well-funded government (US and Mexico) ‘studies’ about the environment (climate, water supply, etc.) in our fair community and the entities behind the research all have the necessary bona fides required for me to take them at least somewhat seriously and as being credible.
For example in their report they are asserting that between now and 2030 the population here will be in the 100,000 neighborhood and that tourism will continue to grow from a current estimated annual ‘tourist’ count of 1,000,000 to a yet-to-be determined future number, also by 2030.
I’m not convinced the current tourist count is an accurate number, because if it is we’d have about 20,000 ‘visitors’ in town each week dining in the restaurants, shopping, etc. But for now I’ll leave that number and issue for another day, time and rant.
What I find interesting is that our population will have to increase about 122% over the next 18 quickly passing years, or roughly at an annual growth rate in the 4.5% ratio and that concerns me because I don’t know where the jobs will come from to support the forecasted increase in our population.
I do have a few ideas that would surely assist in creating those badly need jobs such as becoming (e.g.) El Centro of N. Mexico Medical hub for all those under and/or uninsured U.S. plus Mexican citizens (Canadians, too). As a community that could create a ton of real, well paying careers with longevity in the explosive global ‘Medical Tourism’ market.
However the only way that would work in the long run is if the participants, such as dentists, doctors, clinics and hospitals, etc., didn’t get all greedy. Because as it stands today there are already ‘dental plans’ in the USA whereby anyone can get most procedures done up there in the ‘old country’ at a cost less than what some dentists here are charging today!
